Divorce and family law matters require a professional and understanding approach from an experienced lawyer. Since 1975, clients have turned to me, attorney Stephen J. Murphy, for qualified assistance in family law and divorce matters. My office is located in Montpelier, Vermont, and I provide representation to clients throughout the state.

When handling a divorce, I represent clients in the central divorce proceedings as well as in issues that stem from the divorce, including:

  • Property division
  • Child support
  • Child custody and visitation
  • Spousal support and alimony

I assist clients in determining which avenue of resolution best suits their divorce situation. Below are the most common ways through which a divorce is handled:

  • Collaborative Divorce

Handling cases through the collaborative law process is often effective when both parties wish to work together to resolve their divorce and resulting issues. This avenue of resolution is designed to assist families in dealing with a divorce and relates issues as respectfully as possible while working side-by-side to ensure that the needs of all parties are met as effectively as possible. Throughout handling a case through collaborative law, the parties and their lawyers agree to resolve the issues in a way that eliminates controversy and emotional court proceedings. Decisions need to be realistic and accommodating for the entire family.

  • Divorce Litigation

Though it is not always right in every case, a traditional legal approach to seeking a resolution to a divorce is one that can often be effective when the parties are in disagreement. Matters are handled in formal litigation involve courtroom proceedings with each party retaining a lawyer. These proceedings are presided over by a judge who, upon hearing the case and reviewing any supporting materials, will make a decision regarding the divorce and any other issues that stem from the divorce.
